Community participation in healthcare decision-making is an essential component of effective and sustainable healthcare systems. By involving communities in decisions about healthcare priorities, resource allocation, and program implementation, governments can ensure that health policies align with the unique needs of the population. In Benue State, where communities are predominantly agrarian and face challenges such as limited access to healthcare and high disease burden, participatory decision-making holds potential for improving health outcomes (Okpe et al., 2023).
However, community participation in healthcare decision-making in Benue State remains limited due to systemic barriers such as lack of awareness, insufficient platforms for engagement, and inadequate representation of marginalized groups. This study explores the extent and impact of community involvement in healthcare decisions in the state, providing insights into challenges and opportunities for enhancing participation.
Despite the recognized importance of community participation in healthcare decision-making, Benue State continues to face challenges in achieving meaningful engagement. Decisions are often made centrally, with minimal input from community members, particularly those in rural areas. This top-down approach leads to mismatches between policy priorities and community health needs, resulting in inefficiencies and poor health outcomes.
The limited involvement of communities in healthcare decision-making highlights a gap in governance structures and underscores the need for strategies to enhance participation. This study addresses this gap by assessing the current state of community participation and its implications for healthcare delivery in Benue State.
The study focuses on assessing community participation in healthcare decision-making at the local government level in Benue State. Limitations include variability in participation levels across communities and potential bias in self-reported data from respondents.
